A technical drawing is the foundation of every manufacturing process — from machine components to wire EDM dies. Wire EDM and CNC operators read dimensions from drawings, CAD models are built from them and tolerances are defined there. A correctly prepared technical drawing directly saves money in production.

⚙️ What is a Technical Drawing?

A technical drawing is a graphical representation of an object containing: dimensions with tolerances, material and surface treatment, views and sections needed to unambiguously define the geometry. Its purpose is to convey complete, unambiguous information for production.

📐 Key Elements of a Technical Drawing

1. Views and Sections

Front, top and side views are the standard projections. Sections reveal internal features and are essential for complex parts. In wire EDM documentation the top view — the flat cut contour — is the critical one.

2. Dimensions and Tolerances

Dimensions define the size; tolerances define the permissible deviation. In wire EDM production, precise tolerances are critical. Use ISO-compliant tolerances (IT5–IT12).

3. Material and Surface Finish

The drawing must state the material type and mechanical properties (e.g. 1.2379, C45, Vanadis 4E). Material directly affects cutting parameters and cost.

🧩 How to Prepare a Drawing for Wire EDM Production

  • Dimensional accuracy — every ambiguity is a risk of error; use ISO-compliant tolerances
  • Clear geometry — closed contours, no duplicate lines
  • Unambiguous information — all dimensions and tolerances must be readable and complete
  • Correct format — DXF/DWG for 2D wire EDM, STEP for 3D models

⚠️ Common Errors in Technical Drawings

  • Missing critical dimensions → delays and queries to the customer
  • Inaccurate or unclosed geometry → CAM program errors
  • Material not specified → wrong machine parameter settings
  • Too much information on one drawing → interpretation difficulties
⚠️ The difference between a good and bad drawing can account for tens of percent of the total production cost.

🔍 Technical Drawing vs CAD Model

The technical drawing is the basis for creating a 3D CAD model (SolidWorks, MegaCAD) and for programming the machine in CAM (PEPS). The better the drawing, the faster and cheaper the product. The ideal flow: technical drawing → CAD model → CAM programming → wire EDM production.
